From Family Roots to Arizona Game Days
Sports have always been part of the Someburros family story. From a baseball signing bonus that helped open Poncho’s in 1972 to serving fans at some of Arizona’s biggest sports venues today, discover how our family’s love of sports continues to bring people together.
At Someburros, family, food, and community have always been at the heart of our story. But there's another tradition that has been part of our family for generations: sports.
From cheering on the Sun Devils to grabbing dinner together after practice, sports have always been a way for our family to come together. Today, that family tradition continues as Someburros brings our Sonoran Mexican favorites to some of Arizona's biggest sporting venues.
A Baseball Signing Bonus That Started It All
Long before Someburros became an Arizona favorite, baseball helped set our family’s story in motion.
In 1972, a baseball signing bonus helped the Vasquez family open Poncho’s, laying the foundation for what would eventually become the Someburros we know and love today.
That first step was about more than opening a restaurant. It was the beginning of a family business built around hard work, tradition, and bringing people together over great food.
In 1986, the family opened the first Someburros location at Mill Avenue and Baseline Road in Tempe. What started as a family dream grew into a Sonoran Mexican restaurant rooted in Arizona, with a legacy that continues to grow today.
A Full-Circle Moment for the Vasquez Family
For George and Mary Vasquez, sports were about family just as much as they were about the game.
They would take their kids to Arizona State University football games, cheering on the Sun Devils from seats high up at the top of the stadium. Those memories became part of the family’s connection to ASU and the Arizona sports community.
Today, that story has come full circle. Their son, Tim Vasquez, now the owner of Someburros, has helped bring the family’s restaurant into the very stadium where those childhood memories were made.
Having a Someburros location inside Mountain America Stadium is more than a place to grab a bite during a game. It represents generations of family memories, a love for Arizona sports, and how far a dream can go.

More Than Game-Day Food
At Someburros, we know a great game is about more than what happens on the field. It's about the people sitting beside you, the traditions you carry on, and the memories you make along the way.
Our family has spent decades building a business around bringing people together over the Sonoran Mexican food we grew up with. Being part of Arizona's sports community is another way we get to share that tradition with the people who make this state feel like home.
From a baseball signing bonus in 1972 to cheering from the top seats at ASU to serving fans in stadiums across Arizona, sports have always been part of our story.
The game may change, but family tradition never goes out of style.
We'll see you at the next game! ❤️🌮
